What an honest run-rate means in Trixie

If you want to budget well, plan retirement, or simply know whether this month was expensive, you need one number you can trust: what you actually spend.

That number is your run-rate — your typical spending over time. In Trixie, we call it an honest run-rate because it is built from your whole money picture and cleaned so it reflects real outflows, not noise.

This post explains what that means in practice, how Trixie builds it, and how it powers everything from budgets to retirement planning.

The promise in one line

See what you actually have and actually spend — then budget, bill, reward, and retire from reality.

An honest run-rate is the “actually spend” half of that promise.

What “run-rate” means here

Your run-rate is not a single day’s purchases. It is a normalized view of spending over recent months: category averages, recurring patterns, and a catch-all for everything else.

In Trixie it is:

  • Grounded in history — typically built from about six months of categorized activity
  • Adjusted for noise — transfers, credit card payments, and clear one-offs are handled so they do not inflate “what you spend”
  • Usable downstream — budgets start from suggestions based on those averages; retirement Monte Carlo uses real savings and spend; Ask Trixie can reason over the same cleaned picture

You still own the decisions. Trixie surfaces the measurement; you create budgets, set priorities, and decide what to change.

Why the whole balance sheet comes first

Spending alone is incomplete. Cash leaving a checking account might be a transfer to savings, a payment toward a card balance, or a true purchase. Investments, home equity (via Zestimate where available), and manual assets change what “have” means day to day.

Trixie connects:

  • Banks and cards through Plaid (read-only)
  • Investments
  • Real estate estimates
  • Manual assets you add yourself

From that, you get a daily net worth view — the other half of honest money measurement. The run-rate sits on top of the transaction side of that picture so “spend” and “have” stay consistent.

Invite-only access keeps the product focused: you request a spot on the waitlist, get in when invited, and work with a full balance sheet rather than a partial one.

What gets cleaned out of the run-rate

An honest run-rate is mostly about exclusion: deciding what should not count as lifestyle spending when you average your months.

Transfers between your own accounts

Moving money from checking to savings is not spending. Paying yourself into a brokerage account is not a lifestyle category. Trixie pairs transfers so those movements do not look like you “spent” the same dollars twice or burned cash that simply changed pockets.

Credit card payments

Paying a credit card from checking is settling a liability, not a new purchase. The purchase already showed up when you used the card. Including the payment again would double-count. The exclusion engine treats card payments as balance-sheet events so your run-rate stays about consumption and true outflows.

One-offs that should not define “typical”

A wedding gift, a security deposit, or a once-a-year insurance premium can dominate a raw monthly total. Trixie helps pull clear one-offs out of the averages that feed your run-rate and budget suggestions, so “typical” stays typical.

Splits and categorization that match reality

Sometimes one bank line is partly groceries and partly household. Splits and careful categories keep the averages honest. The goal is not perfection on day one — it is a run-rate that gets more trustworthy as your picture is complete.

How honest run-rate shows up in daily use

Once the measurement is clean, the rest of Trixie can stay concrete.

Budgets from your history. Suggestions are based on roughly six months of category averages. You review and create the budgets you want. Rollover and a catch-all help the plan match how money actually moves, without pretending the app invents your plan for you.

Recurring bills with predicted due dates. Recurring charges and email reminders sit next to the same transaction history, so “what’s coming” and “what you usually spend” are one story.

Card rewards gaps. When you see where spend lands versus a rewards catalog, you are comparing against real patterns — not a guess.

Household visibility. Partners can share a household with per-account visibility, so the run-rate reflects the household you actually manage.

Retirement Monte Carlo from real numbers. Projections use your portfolio, savings behavior, and spend picture — the same reality the run-rate describes — rather than a generic template.

Ask Trixie. Chat that uses tools over your data can answer questions about run-rate, categories, and trends. It is a feature on top of the measurement layer, not the product’s category claim. Trixie does not manage money for you, move funds, or auto-create budgets.

What an honest run-rate is not

Clarity matters as much as capability.

  • Not open signup — Trixie is invite-only; start at the waitlist.
  • Not bill pay or moving money — Plaid connections are read-only; you see and plan; you move money in your own institutions.
  • Not a credit score product — the focus is balance sheet and truthful spend.
  • Not “AI manages your money” — Ask Trixie helps you explore your data; you remain in charge.
  • Not auto-created budgets — suggestions from history; you create what you keep.

Web and iPhone both work from the same underlying picture so your honest run-rate is not trapped on one device.

A simple way to think about it

Imagine two monthly totals:

  • Raw outflow — every debit that left an account
  • Honest run-rate — outflows that represent real spending and true patterns after transfers, card payments, and one-offs are handled correctly

Only the second number is a fair input to “Can we afford this?”, “Is dining up?”, or “What savings rate supports retirement?”

Trixie is built so that second number is the default — whole balance sheet for what you have, exclusion engine for what counts as spend, then budgets, bills, rewards insight, and retirement from that same reality.

Getting started

Trixie is invite-only. If you want to see what you actually have and actually spend, request an invite on the waitlist.

When you are in, connect accounts, complete the balance sheet, and let the run-rate settle over a few months of history. The measurement gets sharper as the picture gets fuller — and every planning feature stands on that foundation.
